North Carolina Man Charged with Counterfeiting

20 12 2010

Last Thursday (December 16, 2010) a 54-year-old Wilson resident in North Carolina was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that he sold counterfeit Viagra and Cialis. Awni Shuaib Zayyad’s arrest resulted from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security. He was charged with conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit drugs and three counts of holding and dispensing counterfeit drug products with the intent to defraud and mislead. Of course this man was released on bail. The arrest was part of Operation Guardian, a multiagency effort designed to combat the importation and distribution of harmful, foreign-manufactured products.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says he sold more than 500 fake Viagra pills on May 25. In August, authorities say, he transported 600 fake Viagra pills and 226 counterfeit Cialis pills. IF this man is convicted he will face a maximum of 10 years in prison for his trafficking counts and five years for the conspiracy counts. He also faces a total fine of $7 million.

Erectile dysfunction drugs are one of the most widely counterfeited prescription medication. It is so common. In a lot of reports and articles I read, this one seems to always be in the forefront besides anti-malarials. This truly is a terrible crime and it is happening inside the United States. I am trying to post more articles about what is happening in the US because it seems a bit harder to fathom. I am in Virginia right now and this happened less than ten hours away from me. I hope this guy gets everything he asked for.
