Dogs and Counterfeit Drugs

29 03 2011

I’m going to dedicate this post to all the people who appreciate dogs out there. Personally, I am more of a dog person than a cat person, but I still think they both serve purposes. Nevertheless, I found this awesome article about a dog from the Netherlands who sniffed out fake Viagra!

His name is Springer and he detects various narcotics AND specializes in discovering consignments of counterfeit Viagra. This week Finland is hosting this awesome animal to help Finnish Customs in their special campaign aimed at detecting fake drugs. Finns are said to annually buy around 44 million euros of fake drugs, which are mostly ordered from the internet. Between 3-30 packages of counterfeit drugs are found daily by officials.

Springer is a well-behaved dog. Even the dog’s trainer, Nico Neef, says “At home Springer is very peaceful and not at least interested in the smell of medicines. Work is never mixed with pleasure.” I guess that is a bit comforting. Glad to know the dog isn’t an addict.
